Zakes Cafe: We opened as Zakes Cakes in the East Falls Section of Philly in December 1979. We rehabilitated a beautiful Victorian era storefront, opened the bakery on the first floor and lived above!
My first time to dine at Zakes Cafe for dinner was last week. We had made a reservation, although it really wasn't necessary for a Thursday evening. We selected the "price fixed" menu, which was $28 pp. (although I just noticed their website says the price is $25 pp??) Hmmm......
I started my meal with the lobster mac 'n' cheese which was scrumptious. In fact, it was the best mac 'n' cheese I've ever had. My main course entree was the grilled ahi tuna which was also delicious. A dessert sampler followed, and the three cake bites were oh so good.
So why the "Average" rating? Well, being somewhat of a foodie, I thought the portions were on the small size. I didn't leave hungry, but for the price, portions could have been a little larger. The restaurant's ambiance is average. Tables were very close together, and we were up against a wall, so I didn't have much room to move around (I kept banging my elbow!). The chairs aren't very comfortable to sit on. They seemed somewhat dated and a cushion on the seat would certainly help. The decor in the restaurant is average - hard wood floors, basic tables, non-descript paintings on the walls.
For a casual evening with great food, this is a nice change of pace. I would have just liked to see a little larger portions, and maybe some carpeting or new tables/chairs.
