The title is taken from Connors’s memorable aside to a TV camera as the crowd cheered wildly during a break in a particularly tense five-set marathon against a much younger, much faster, much higher-ranked opponent, when, surrounded by deafening cheers — not just from those who were there at the time but the TV audience watching at home — “This is what they want! This is what they want!”
Tennis is a niche sport but, as This is What They Want shows, Connors helped elevate tennis in the public consciousness to a level previously reserved for big-time boxing matches.
In fact, there's a lot more to This Is What They Want. The film tells the story of how the sometimes overlooked game of tennis became a marquee sporting attraction.
